SIAE MICROELETTRONICA: Integrating Phased Arrays to Support Emerging SATCOM

SIAE MICROELETTRONICA: Integrating Phased Arrays to Support Emerging SATCOM

About Us Build with Qorvo Leaf SIAE Ka-Band.png

Satellite communications architectures are becoming complex as new systems demand higher throughput, flexible connectivity and compact terminals. Phased array antennas play an important role in these systems by enabling electronically steerable beams and more efficient use of spectrum.

As part of the European SHIFT program, SIAE MICROELETTRONICA is developing a Ka-band phased antenna array platform designed to support new and emerging satellite communications applications.

The platform integrates Qorvo beamformer IC technology to support accurate beam steering and efficient signal distribution across the antenna array. Integrating this technology early in the design process allowed the team to focus development on other key areas of the system, including antenna design, millimeter-wave feed networks and thermal management.

The resulting phased array architecture is designed to support multiple satellite communication scenarios, including satellite-to-satellite links and satellite-to-Earth communications in Low Earth Orbit missions

The Challenge: Balancing Performance, Efficiency and Design Constraints in Ka-Band Phased Arrays

Designing phased array antennas for Ka-band satellite communications introduces several technical challenges. Systems must deliver high throughput and flexible beam steering while meeting strict constraints for size, power consumption and thermal management. Within the SHIFT program, SIAE MICROELETTRONICA set out to develop a phased antenna array platform capable of supporting emerging SATCOM applications while maintaining efficient system integration and performance.

The Solution: Accelerating Development with Integrated Beamforming Technology

SIAE MICROELETTRONICA integrated Qorvo beamformer IC technology into the phased array architecture to support accurate beam steering and efficient signal distribution across the antenna array. Using established beamforming technology early in the design process enabled the team to accelerate development while focusing on other critical elements of the platform, including antenna design, millimeter-wave feed networks and thermal management.
